Angie Comments: I wasn't expecting much, but I did hope that they at least kept the character interesting and intelligent like she seemed in the first one. In the end, it really just felt like an older actress trying to reclaim her youth. The story wasn't was good and even the big reveal at the end I thought could have been done a lot better. However it also does worse is other areas, such as changing some memorable lines and adding some dorky dream sequences. Still, in the end, I enjoyed the film overall and am happy to own it. Justin Comments: The visual effects and costumes are very good. The story and pacing are barely comprehensible.

Justin Comments: I think Ryan Gosling did a good job. Same with Bryan Cranston. Most of the other actors seemed wrong for their roles. The biggest problem is that we never learned why the driver acts as he does. It's okay to be quiet and cool then to explode into violence, but most of the time we need to know why someone is like that. That or a resolution. But we got neither. Most of the characters didn't seem realistic. In fact, that's the difference between Drive and Taxi Driver; Taxi Driver is about a crazy guy in a regular world, whereas Drive is about a bunch of people who are unrealistic in their own ways. Oh, I didnt' like the soundtrack at all.

That's one of the things I didn't like about Tarantino's last movie, Jackie Brown -- just too slow. I mean Volume 1 sets this "we're going to be action-packed and have lots of fun" pace, and then Volume 2 turns around with "nah, on second thought, let's slow down and have a bunch of character development". Not that I have anything against character development, but the two halves just dodn't seem to me to fit together seemlessly. And the truth is, as an avid action fan, I enjoyed the first one better. Justin Comments: I liked the film more when it was called 'Rushmore', but this one isn't bad. I didn't actually laugh out loud during the film, as the 'funny' situations generally hinge on laughing at a super-dork. The surreal level of dorkiness the main character and his brother inhabit is itself pretty funny, but not enough to carry an entire film. I still give the movie a '7' because it seems a good commentary about popularity (and how most people give up their individuality to achieve it) in school, and many other social aspects of the High School experience.

You see it is a mixture of very good things and very bad things and it's hard to find out which weighs more. I mean the visualistic style is of course amazing. The characters are interesting, but not overly deep. It definitely feels like a comic book on the screen more so than anything I've seen to date. However, the dialog is also just like a comic book -- which was cute at first, but then got really old, and eventually seemed strange coming out of actors' mouths. And of course, the setting is pretty dark, which leads to some depressing stories and kind of a 'down' feeling at the end. But the visuals.... I mean, it reminds me of Hero for the impact and stunningness..... yet on the dark side. It is definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Just make sure you have something happy to do afterwards. ;) Justin Comments: I enjoy the style quite a bit. I think Bruce Willis played his part a bit too understated. Mickey Rourke was incredible.

Amadala, who used to be a queen, acts like she has no backbone and little notion of politics now. But the film is somewhat entertaining. I like it more each time I watch it.

Angie Comments: This is one of those strange films that I can't even really explain why I liked it so much. Mostly because of the artist aspects -- they seemed to touch me in an indefinable way. The plot is kind of strange, and there isn't much to it, but the way that everything was presented felt enjoyable. I often complain about slow-paced movies, but this pace felt more comfortable to me. Probably I just like the concept presented by the title -- that women should be talked to. Justin Comments: This film is way too 'European metaphorical' for me. (An example is a lava-lamp rendition of an egg being fertilized....I think.) Also, I find ballet and opera distasteful, and since they are used as metaphorical images in the film I can't get past that distaste. A snake is killed in the film offscreen; I didn't like that it was offscreen (should have been onscreen as special effect)..it was as if the camera were pointed at the sky during a scene about an auto accident. Footage from a real bullfight was in the film, which to me seemed quite cruel to the multiply-speared, bleeding and soon-to-die (with three others) bull. As an admittedly non-masculine man myself, the theme of men/women having traits from the opposite gender is obvious and uninteresting to me.

Justin Comments: I don't know why this film was so well-received. It's way too long, it's repetitive, it barely sets up a conflict (let alone resolution of said conflict), and the main character is completely despicable. Di Caprio wasn't bad at all, but I think he was miscast in this role. I say these things as a huge fan of both Scorcese and Di Caprio, so I'm genuinely let down by this film and confused by its Academy nominations and general very positive reception.
